A Pair of Engravings, printed in sepia; The East Front and the West Front with Principal Plan of Esher Place, Surrey, By John Vardy after William Kent circa 1744

Esher Place was acquired by the Rt. Hon. Henry Pelham, (1694-1754) in 1729. When Pelham was elevated to Prime Minister he hired the architect William Kent (c.1685-1748) to construct 22 Arlington Place in St James’s, London and renovate Esher Place in Surrey. Kent demolished much of the medieval and Tudor portions – except for the gatehouse – and added the wings applying some of the earliest Gothic reviva lornamentation in England.
