Oil on Canvas; “War of the Spanish Succession, 1702-13”, A Mid 18th Century Marine Scene by Peter Monamy
“War of the Spanish Succession, 1702-13″, the fleet under Admiral Sir George Rooke, assembling and victualling in the downs at the outbreak of war – September 1702.
Peter Monamy was born in London in 1681, the youngest son of a Guernseyman. Throughout his career he was heavily influenced by the works of Willem van de Velde, the Younger; and was one of the first English artists to continue the tradition of Willem van de Velde the Younger’s marine painting into the 18th century. His work is representative of the early British school of maritime art, which still shows an overwhelming influence of the Dutch style. Monamy was self-taught, but may have worked in van de Velde’s studio in Greenwich.
